National History Day.
Program Overview: Why NHD Works.
National History Day makes history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural, and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires students through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction.
NHD 2020 Theme: Breaking Barriers in History.
Every year National History Day frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. This year’s theme is Breaking Barriers in History. The intentional selection of the theme for NHD is to provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.

DocsTeach.
Use this special DocsTeach page from the National Archives to help prepare for National History Day 2020. Explore the Primary Source possibilities and the Teaching Activities to jump start your thinking about Breaking Barriers.
REMINDER: Your NHD Project should focus on an historical event or person at least 20 years old (before 2000) to make it a true reflection of History and not a simple retelling of a "current event." |
NewseumED.
NewseumED makes history, civics and media literacy relevant to students’ lives. Our approach begins with using the First Amendment as a springboard to illuminate the challenges and ideals of our democracy and to cultivate the public’s ability to make informed and well-reasoned decisions in a diverse and demanding world. Leveraging the museum’s collection, we provide primary sources, interactive tools and lesson plans that make history resonate today and shed new light on current debates. NewseumED offers rich online and on-site content for student projects related to the NHD 2020 Theme of "Breaking Barriers in History."
